From isolation to integration: building community for first-time expats

After relocating to Biarritz, I faced the dual challenge of building a social circle while navigating a language barrier. Existing tools such as Bumble BFF, Facebook, and/or Meetup, all had shortcomings, making it difficult to cultivate meaningful friendships. The idea of Tribe came to me as a way to overcome this challenge.

Bumble BFF's dating app mechanics created awkward interactions, Facebook groups lacked genuine engagement, and none of these platforms addressed the practical needs that newcomers manage alongside social connection. User research confirmed these issues affected other first-time expats.

Tribe addresses both social and practical newcomer needs through interest-based activities and resource guidance. The app facilitates relationship building through shared experiences—language exchanges, hiking groups, professional workshops—while providing contextual guidance for navigating new environments. The platform integrates community building with practical support, eliminating the need for multiple disconnected tools.

App ideation & strategy

Drawing from my personal experience relocating to Biarritz, I identified the dual challenge newcomers face: social isolation paired with navigating administrative complexity in a new country. I defined my target audience as first-time expats aged 25-35 and conceptualized Tribe as an integrated platform that would address both social and practical needs simultaneously, rather than treating them as separate problems requiring different solutions.

Target user: first-time expats

Through user research, I identified that first-time expats aged 25-35 represent the highest-value user segment for the community app. This demographic faces multiple challenges simultaneously: they lack the established systems that experienced expats have developed, don't have the corporate support that sponsored relocations provide, yet experience both social isolation and administrative overwhelm at the same time. What makes them ideal users is their combination of high need and high engagement potential. They have the schedule flexibility to attend activities, the digital comfort to adopt new apps, and the motivation to actively seek solutions. Unlike families with young children who are time-constrained, or serial expats who already have established processes, this group genuinely needs comprehensive support across all aspects of integration.
